Ultimate Chess Library Project

the_seeker: Hi, mates. I have a proposition to make. I think we could reorganize a bit, with little joint effort, to create an ultimate collection of chess items. With so many places dropping like pawns in the endgame, I think we could use one stable place where we could upload and download from. Here's what I have in mind. Let's use Mediafire for our repository. There are numerous advantages: 1. It's free. 2. Files don't get deleted. 3. There's unlimited space. 4. Both download and upload speed are maximum and we don't have to worry about seeders either. I have been using Mediafire for Chess Library for a long time now, and without any problems. So it's good by test. Now, as for the execution, I imagie thsi too like as follows: we piuck up a few members who have relatively fast connection, time on their hands and are willing to upload chess goodies to the designated account. Then we divide the material amongst them: 1 person uploads chessbase stuff, the other covekta, another one ICC videos, someone else ebooks, etc etc. Hope you see where I am going with this. I try to do that myself at Chess Library, but it's a lot of uploading for one person, not to metnion its time consuming and I am lazy. However, if each of the uploaders took care only of one category, we'd have a full library in no time. I really trhionk this could work and would help us to have a complete chess library well organized and in not time, with little effort. We could even use my Chess Library as the starting point, as there are many uploads already. One thing I would advise against though is sharing the account access with all, instead of chosen, reliable members. The reason for that is simple - with access to the account one can delete all the uploads with one click, and we all know there are some mean-spirited people lurking around, as few of them as there might be. Hope someone steps up willing to help. I for one, volunteer to take care of my share of uploads. So who else could chip in? mediafire.com/antoniusblock

dux: This is a great idea Sharing the account with many people is not good and also there is no need for it: If some non-upload member want to share something he can upload it to his own mediafire account, post the link and one of the uploader just add/copy (no need to download-upload anything) that link to the library. The only problem is that not many people has bandwith+material, some here may have good bandwith but not much to share, still little by little... With your idea it is also easy to backup the site, because you have more time, that way you keep the backup private and ready to go

the_seeker: I am sure many people have both the bandwith and the chess goodies, after all, we are all dealing here in chess materials, plus, I very much doubt that all of a sudden everyone is on dial-up. So all we need is some willingness from lionroaders. Basically, if we divide the uploads amongst a few members, each of us would have only a small portion to provide to the chess library. So far, over 80 views, but only one response, which is a bit saddening, coz everyone makes requests or downloads new items, but few are willing to work together and contribute a bit.

chessgod101: I really like this idea. Angeloudied and I have been working on the chess engine directory for some time now. Once I am finished with the engines, I was thinking about expanding it to databases, books, videos, etc..

the_seeker: Chessgod - I propose to join forces and focus on one location for uploads, so that we have one comprehensive library, instead of several accounts. Regardless of location, I am willing to cooperate and hopefully, with some more help, we could have a pretty complete library in no time.

chessgod101: Very Well. We could use my directory if it is okay with you. My collection consists mainly of chess engines. I know you have a lot of books and videos in your library. If you want, I could go ahead and save your library files to my directory, and I will share the password with you via personal message so we can join forces and complete a vast collection of chess material.

indianajones: Count me in too guys ... I have a suggestion though ... Why not everyone upload to mediafire whatever they have ? Then you can just link up the files to your account just as you mentioned ... And you need not share your account with everyone too.(It will be safe that way ) Ill let you know after ten days what I am gonna upload since I am off from my pc due to a tournament and will be on a laptop... But I like your idea and if I remember right i too mooted this idea some months ago ... So ... I am willing really (i.e after ten-twelve days) to help you out.

Gambit_Man: Count me in - I have fast Broadband and would be keen to help and contribute - great idea.

Cheetah: ....................... One thing I would advise against though is sharing the account access with all, instead of chosen, reliable members. The reason for that is simple - with access to the account one can delete all the uploads with one click, and we all know there are some mean-spirited people lurking around, as few of them as there might be. Unfortunately ..... This is very true, Seeker .... There ARE some negative souls here in Chess Cyberspace who can access and read our forum, and who may have some serious jealous streaks .... so I agree ! At least, let's keep it hush-hush for however long we can !!!! And about our repository site selection ...??... Have we considered & weighed the pros and cons of other sites ....???... I know that some free upload sites will delete files after 90 days of inactivity...... and some after 180 days of inactivity ..... but I'm not sure of Mediafire's policy ....???? But our own member Chessgod should have some experience about this. At any rate .................... Count Me In Buddy!!!! I've come to the realization that I'm not getting any younger [67 this January] ...... and I wish TO SHARE All & Everything I HAVE ..... or, Pass It Forward !!!! Like many have said before me ...... You Can't Take It With You !!!!!

the_seeker: Ok, guys, you have mentioned 'linking' several times now - can someone please explain how this works? I see no such option in Mediafire. Is it activated with pro account only? I think the priority is to decide on one account, so that with have the whole library neatly stacked in one place, instead of having to browse several accounts - unless this linking allows to easily link/upload from one account to the other. But will it allow to keep the folders and files neatly categorized and ordered as if all of it have been uploaded in one account? Asfor the designated accoun, chessgod, I really have noobjections against choosing any account. Logically, though, I think it would easier to move the engines, as they take up little space, rather than what's been uploaded to CL already (checked today, its a bit above 52 GB). But again, as long as we choose one account, I am game with anything. Great to see some decisive responses. One other thing I would like o prioritize is having the items neatly catalogued (categories, file/folder naming, etc.) so that they are easily searchable. As soon as we decide on the one single location or this linking feature, I am willing to start uploading (chess books maybe?). p.s. Can you share the link to the engine depository, please?

sparky: Can count me in too! suggestions/ideas: 1. mediafire's a nice place. (can either copy seeker's or start afresh). when the "librarians" have been finalised probably they'll decide on folder structure etc. 2. when uploading, copy to a 2nd acc. librarians keep a backup directory to themselves, just in case (eg someone reports the shared library to mediafire etc).

the_seeker: Ok, I am still waiting for a response from chessgod in the matter of the designated account. Meanwhile, we could divide the the inistail uploads amongst ourselves. Up until now, we have the following volunteers: dux chessgod101 indianajones gambit_man cheetah sparky myself Could everyone please speak up on the matter? What uploads would you start with? I am volunteering to upload books for started, but I can easily upload something else. I think it's crucial everyone picks something they have already neatly catalogues in terms of file nameing and such, so that the material is ready for upload and easily searchable. It wil also allow the uploaders to post the complete lists of the uploaded material easily. We could also create a new forum, specifically realating to the library contents - listsings, offers and requests - but no links. This way we have a place safe from deletion but clear and informative in regards to the library. Alternatively, we could create some sections/subsections here. One more idea that comes to mind is to reorganize in the matter of updates. Who's got access to new ICC lectures? Who's got new scans of some magazine etc etc. This will provide us with the possibility of organizing new uploads and completing our collections.

Tix: Ok, my connection is not that good, but I agree on contributing.

the_seeker: That's great to hear, Tix. I think we could simply establish that those with slow connection take care of small uploads, like scans and other small files. I have relatively good connection, so can upload big files, if necessary.

Tix: Yes, I agree

sparky: Books are good with me.

odessa: Just upload to the appropriate folder here : http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=7fef3909b0a76f8495af63b7d44918aa4ed98907%203b9d5fd1

Cheetah: the_seeker writes: I think we could simply establish that those with slow connection take care of small uploads, like scans and other small files. OKay, then count me in for uploading some of these small file types. I'm probably the only one here who still operates on dialup with an average d/l - u/l rate of between 2.9 & 3.1 k/sec ..... But it's not so much one's connection speed that really matters ..... it's how big one's heart is to share !

Djuko: Hi all, I think the idea is excellent, but I don´t think that its realization should aim the only and unique repository place. It would be much better if we have many different places; in any case more than one place. Why? Because if something unexpected happen, for example a "terrorist attack" on a repository building, a fire or any natural disaster, we´ll be on the safe side if we have our archives in more than one place. Sorry that I cannot contribute more, because I neither have other materials to share, except chess engines, nor I have tecnical knowledge for helping you. Best wishes

joakimvitriol: My uploading speed is not very fast but I can try to upload some smaller files like for instance ICC (chess.fm) videos. Here is Adams-McShane from Tal Memorial: [hideguest]http://www.mediafire.com/myfiles.php[/hideguest]
